Ariarne Elizabeth Titmus was born in Launceston, Tasmania, Australia on September 7, 2000. She is the daughter of Australian journalist Steve Titmus, the host of Channel 7’s Gold Coast Nightly News. For better training possibilities, Titmus and her family relocated from Tasmania to Queensland in 2015. In August 2016, she won a silver medal in the 4X200 meter freestyle relay at the 2016 Junior Pan Pacific Swimming Championships, which were held in August in Hawaii, United States. Titmus also won a bronze medal in the 400 meter freestyle with a time of 4:09.81, which was 2.29 seconds slower than the winner, Li Bingjie.

Titmus won three gold medals at the Commonwealth Games in 2018 in the 400-meter freestyle, 800-meter freestyle, and the 4 x 200-meter freestyle relay. She also took up the silver in the 200-meter freestyle. With a timing of 3:53.92, Titmus broke Wang Jianjiahe’s previous record set two months earlier in the women’s short course 400-meter freestyle category of the FINA World Swimming Championships 2018 and took home the gold medal. She was chosen as one of 27 Australian swimmers to compete in the World Aquatics Championships 2019 in Gwangju, South Korea. She placed second in her preliminary heat of the women’s 400-meter freestyle, but she took first place and set an Oceania record in the final with a time of 3:58.76, beating one and only Katie Ledecky by a whole second.

Australia’s Titmus claimed two gold medals in the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics. In the 400-meter freestyle final, she beat world record holder Ledecky by 0.002 seconds with a timing of 3:56.69. She set a new Olympic record of 1:53.50 in the 200-meter freestyle final, trailing Hong Kong’s Siobhan Haughey for most of the race until charging back strongly to take the lead on the final loop. Titmus finished 1.26 seconds behind Katie Ledecky in the 800-meter freestyle final, earning a silver medal. At the Australian Swimming Championships 2022, Titmus broke Katie Ledecky’s previous record of 3:56.46 for the long course 400-meter freestyle with a timing of 3:56.40.
