Luca Brecel was born on 8 March 1995. He plays snooker professionally and is from Belgium. His mother Mirella was a housewife, while his father Carlo worked as a “hail hunter,” going after storms to fix the damage they caused. After playing pool with his father during a family vacation, Brecel decided to take up snooker when he was nine years old. Brecel received his first coaching from Danny Moermans while living with the family in Maasmechelen. Later, the family relocated to a house with a snooker table for him to use. He was taken out of school so he could receive home tutoring and more time to practice the game. At the age of twelve, he broke a competitive century.

Brecel turned pro the following month after winning the 2011 European Under-19 championship at the age of 14. His first Triple Crown final appearance came at the 2021 UK Championship, where he finished 16th in the world rankings after beating Zhao Xintong 5-10. A week later, he won the 2021 Scottish Open by outlasting John Higgins 9-5. Brecel’s appearance in the Welsh Open’s round of 16—where he lost to John Higgins 4-3—represented his best performance in a ranking tournament during the 2019–20 snooker season. He failed to make the top 32 during this season. He defeated Stuart Bingham in the championship group in June 2020 and tied with Ryan Day and Ben Woollaston to win the non-ranking Championship League. Brecel failed to advance past the third round of any competition the following year.

Brecel advanced to the 2021 English Open quarterfinals, where he fell to Ronnie O’Sullivan 5-1. Brecel advanced to the 2021 UK Championship final. His appearance in the Triple Crown event final made him the first player from continental Europe to do so. Brecel defeated Stephen Maguire in the semifinals 6-0 and defeated Kyren Wilson 6-4, scoring four centuries in the process. This put him in the championship game. Zhao Xintong defeated him 10-5 in the championship match. Brecel, who finished in second place, rose from forty to eighteen in the global rankings. He won the Scottish Open, his second-ranking event, the following week. Brecel reached the 2022 English Open final while also winning his third ranking title at the 2022 Championship League in the 2022-23 season.
