The latest episode of WWE NXT emenated from the from the Capitol Wrestling Center (CWC) in Orlando, Florida on June 30. The show featured the final build towards NXT’s next special show, which is NXT Great American Bash in a week’s time. As such, there was a lot packed into the two-hour episode – including a time overrun for the main event. However, fans were treated to yet another excellent episode from the black and yellow brand. A new North American champion was crowned while a brand new faction made their presence felt. The new contenders for the NXT women’s tag team titles were also decided. As for the Great American Bash, matches were added while stakes to existing matches were also ramped up.

Let’s check out the full results of the show.

Isaiah ‘Swerve’ Scott – finally a champion

The main event of the night saw Isaiah “Swerve” Scott take on Bronson Reed in a North American championship match. The match came about when Reed was being asked about the NXT Breakout Tournament, which returns in two weeks.

Reed spoke about how the tournament offered him a chance to show what he’s made of. But Scott interrupted him, saying he took was part of that tournament and goaded Reed into giving him a title shot.

The match was pretty one-sided, with Reed dominating most of it. However, Scott won thanks to the numbers game of his new faction Hit Row Records.

They didn’t get involved until late in the match, when Ashante Thee Adonis struck Reed behind the referee’s back. Reed responded by throwing him and Top Dolla through the ringside screen.

However, the distraction proved enough for Swerve. A House Call and a 450 splash later, we had a new champion.

The win sets up Swerve and Hit Row nicely, who look set to be a mainstay of the brand for a while. As for Reed, the loss does him little harm.

Especially when you consider the fact that he’s supposedly been working dark matches on the main roster lately. At this point, a call-up feels inevitable.

Zoey Stark and Io Shirai – new #1 contenders

The show opened with a triple threat women’s tag team match, with the winner’s getting a title shot. And my word, was this an action-packed match.

There was little time to take in any of the action, but the frenzied bout worked well as a show opener. In the end, it was Zoey Stark and Io Shirai who pinned Dakota Kai to be crowned number one contenders.

The result works for a variety of reasons. For one, Kai and NXT women’s champions Raquel Gonzalez can now focus on whoever steps up to face the champion next.

For the other, it gives Shirai something good to do while also getting Stark over by proxy. The tag team match between this team and The Way – Candice LaRae and Indi Hartwell – should be an absolute banger.

Johnny Gargano, New WWE NXT champion?

Johnny Gargano attacked NXT champion Karrion Kross, who recovered and stormed to the ring demanding Gargano come down and face him. Gargano came down and told Kross he’s a smarter wrestler than him. At that moment, Austin Theory attacked Kross from behind.

Kross would recover though amd administer a two-on-one beating to both members of The Way. A long brawl ensued that was interrupted by Samoa Joe and security.

However, the attacks continued outside and Kross again got the better of Gargano. He nearly ran over Gargano with his car too, but last-minute intervention from Joe saved Johnny Wrestling.

A feud between two heels is normally a bad idea but this one seems to be working so far. It helps that Gargano is outwitting his foe rather than simply using the number’s game.

And again, given Kross appeared on WWE Main Event and has worked dark matches recently, is he going to drop the NXT championship to Gargano? It sure seems so.

WWE NXT – best of the rest

  • Roderick Strong, who last week was revealed as a member of the Diamond Mine faction, beat Asher Hale in a squash match. Afterwards, Diamond Mine’s manager Malcolm Bivens promised this is only the beginning.
  • Cameron Grimes beat Ari Sterling in a short match. Afterwards, million dollar champion LA Knight goaded and taunted him. Grimes challenged him for the title, and Knight accepted – but if Grimes lost, he would be Knight’s butler.
  • Kyle O’Reilly and Adam Cole faced off in a really good promo segment. Both attacked each other verbally, but with security – and Samoa Joe – present things didn’t get out of hand. That is until the end, when O’Reilly locked in a heel lock on Cole that Joe took his time getting broken up. Interesting.
  • Mercedes Martinez and Jake Atlas lost to Tian Sha. However, the ending of the match saw Xia Li give Martinez what looked like a legitimate concussion. The storyline is good, but Li’s in-ring work remains sloppy at times.
  • Timothy Thatcher and Tommaso Ciampa and MSK had a talking segment to hype their tag title match. Both Ciampa and MSK brought the heat on the mic, hyping what was already a much-looked forward to match.
