WWE returned with their latest pay-per-view offering with WWE Money in the Bank emenating from Fort Worth, Texas on Monday (July 19). The event has assumed significant importance in modern-day WWE. Why? Because the MITB contract winners are almost always in line for a big push afterwards. Of course, there’s a reason ‘almost’ is mentioned – it isn’t always a guarantee of a championship run. However, this year’s winners were both deserving in their own right, even if one of them will be heavily debated, as is the norm. Let’s get right to it and check out the results from the show.

Big E and Nikki ASH – WWE Money in the Bank winners

Big E winning the briefcase was probably the least surprising but most correct result on the men’s side. The former New Day powerhouse has been a revelation since going on his singles run earlier this year.

Plus, a result being predictable doesn’t mean it’s bad. Just look at how the capacity crowd at Fort Worth reacted to his victory. People are ready to see the big man in the main event and this could well be the catalyst for that.

As for Nikki Cross… err, ASH, it feels different. The Scot is a reliable in-ring worker and an underrated character but the Almost a Superhero stuff is yet to fully connect.

There’s also a feeling the act is a little goofy as things stand. It harks back to last year when Otis shocked everyone to win the contract but eventually did not get to the promise land of a main event run.

For the sake of Nikki ASH, one would hope that isn’t the case. But it is quite clear the character needs more work.

You can see him – John Cena is back!

The universal championship match between Edge and Roman Reigns closed out the show, naturally. Reigns is WWE’s best heel in years and Edge’s return as fiery veteran babyface has been a blast.

The match felt like a big deal and the crowd were wholly invested. The match that followed was solid, featuring plenty of outside chicanery. The Usos interfered on Reigns’ behalf but Rey Mysterio and son Dominik put a stop to that.

Edge looked likely to submit Reigns but shockingly ate a kick to the head from Seth Rollins! They did a false finish thereafter, with Edge countering a spear attempt with one of his own but only getting a two count.

Still, when Rollins interfered again and distracted Edge, the veteran turned around to eat a spear from Reigns. 1-2-3. The Tribal Chief remains atop the mountain.

But, as he exhorted the crowd to acknowledge him, we got to know who his next challenger will be. AND HIS NAME IS JOHN CENA!

Yes, the 16-time WWE champion’s music hit and he walked down the ramp. He made the “you can’t see me” gesture at Reigns and walked away.

The two have feuded before in 2017 but this feels different. Reigns as a character is as good as he’s ever been, operating on another level that he was three years ago. Cena, however, has not been seen since WrestleMania last year when he lost to Bray Wyatt.

This should be good.

WWE Money in the Bank – best of the rest

  • Jimmy and Jey Uso beat the Mysterios to win the SmackDown tag team titles on the pre-show. That’s not normally a place title changes are done, so this is a pleasant surprise. It also means all members of The Bloodline now hold gold.
  • AJ Styles and Omos retained the Raw tag team titles against The Viking Raiders. Omos was once again the focal point of the match, dominating in large stretches. At one point he even broke up a pin by throwing one Viking Raider on the other!
  • Bobby Lashley retained his WWE championship against Kofi Kingston. The match was basically an extended squash. Lashley hit his Dominator finisher three times before locking in The Hurt Lock and getting Kingston to submit.
  • Charlotte Flair beat Rhea Ripley to win the Raw women’s championship. Stop me if you’ve heard this one before. The match was excellent but how many people wanted another Charlotte title run? Well… you’re getting it anyway.
