The World Judo Championships 2023 is schedule to take place at the Ali Bin Hamad al-Attiyah Arena in Doha, Qatar, from May 7 to May 14, 2023. It is a significant event during the 2024 Summer Olympics qualification period. On the final day of the competition, a mixed-team event will be held. A thrilling week of action will be taking place in Qatar’s Doha as the eagerly awaited 62nd World Judo Championships are scheduled to take place from May 7 to May 14, 2023. This prestigious competition will take place for the first time in the nation’s capital the Arabian Gulf. It is anticipated to draw more than 600 competitors from about 100 different nations.

The competition promises to be an exhilarating display of skill, strength, and technique with 15 world titles up for grabs, including 7 individual categories for men and women and a team event on the final day. With each judoka having the opportunity to earn up to 2,000 points – the maximum possible – for the Olympic ranking, the competition will not only crown world champions but also count towards qualification for the Olympic Games Paris 2024. Teddy Riner, the 10-time champion, and Clarisse Agbegnenou, a five-time world champion, are two of the main attractions. Japan won five world championships at the World Judo Championships 2022 in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. Brazil and the host country, Uzbekistan, each won two championships. The final blocks will start at 19:00 local time (UTC+3). No Indians will be in the action from India.

Prize money 

The sums written are per medalist, bringing the total prizes awarded to €798,000 for the individual events and €200,000 for the team event. The prize money for each Judoka participant in the individual category was € 26,000 euros while in the mixed category, it was € 90,000 euros. The coaches got € 20,800 and € 72,000 in the individual and the mixed categories respectively. In the silver category, the prize money was € 15,000, and € 60,000 in the individual and mixed categories respectively. For the coaches in this category, the prize money is € 12,000 and € 48,000 respectively. Lastly, in the bronze category, the prize money was € 8,000, and € 25,000 in the individual and the mixed category respectively. The coaches received € 6,400 and € 20,000 in the individual and mixed categories respectively.

Russian and Belarusian participation controversy

On April 29, 2023, the final day for event registration, the International Judo Federation made the following announcement: After background checks, Russian and Belarusian athletes will be permitted to compete as individual neutral athletes. Twenty athletes from Russia and Belarus registered to compete in the championships after the announcement. Despite the International Olympic Committee’s recommendation to forego the participation of athletes employed by the Russian or Belarusian military or national security agencies, at least five of the twenty were reportedly connected to the Russian Armed Forces. The Ukrainian team withdrew from the competition in displeasure.
