A strong 48-member Indian rifle and pistol team has been announced by the National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) for the next International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Championship Rifle/Pistol 2022. The championship will commence on Oct 12 and conclude on Oct 25, 2022, in Cairo, Egypt. The selection for the Worlds was based on the results of the National selection trials that took place at Dr. Karni Singh Shooting Range, New Delhi (Pistol) and MPSA, Bhopal (Rifle).

The return of London Olympics silver medalist Vijay Kumar

Olympic silver medalist in 25m rapid fire pistol, Vijay Kumar is all set to make his return to the international level owing to his consistent performances in the Nationals. Manu Bhaker and Anjum Moudgil will lead the Indian women’s team at the Championships. This will be Manu’s first major tournament after an unfortunate outing at the Summer Olympics 2020.

Aishwary and Anjum set to lead Indian contingent at the Worlds

The squad also includes rifle shooters Elavenil Valarivan and Divyansh Singh Panwar who were a part of the Tokyo Olympics 2020. However, both won’t be competing in the same event as they did in the Olympics as Divyansh will represent India in the junior level. Elavenil will team up with Kiran Ankush Jadhav in the 10m rifle mixed team event. The reigning junior world champion Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar will feature in the men’s rifle 3 positions event and is a top contender in the championships. With Aishwary participating alongside Anjum in the mixed team event, India is certainly expected to finish on the podium in this category.

Rising stars on a mission

Promising shooters like Sarabjot Singh, Divyansh Singh Panwar, Pankaj Mukheja, Esha Singh, and Naamya Kapoor will take India’s charge at the junior level. Divyansh who will take part in his first mega event post-Tokyo has won several medals for India in the 2019 edition of the ISSF World Cup. (Four gold, one silver, and one bronze) Punjab’s Pankaj Mukheja outshone all the 3 position rifle shooters (junior) in the National selection trials 5 and 6, thus earning a name for himself in the squad.
