Michael Phelps is widely regarded as the greatest Olympian of all time. American former competition swimmer Michael Phelps was born on June 30, 1985. He has won a total of 28 medals, making him the most successful and decorated Olympian ever. Additionally, Phelps owns the marks for the most Olympic gold medals (23), individual Olympic gold medals (13), and individual Olympic medals (16). 

Phelps broke fellow American swimmer Mark Spitz’s 1972 record of seven first-place finishes in a single Olympic Games when he won eight gold medals at the 2008 Beijing Games. When Phelps won six gold and two bronze medals at the Athens Summer Olympics in 2004, he tied the record for the most medals of any color won at a single event. Phelps took home four gold, two silver, and two bronze medals from the London Summer Olympics in 2012, and five gold, and one silver from the Rio de Janeiro Summer Olympics in 2016. As a result, for the fourth time in a row, he was the most successful athlete in the Summer Olympics.

Phelps holds the long course world record in the men’s 400-meter individual medley and was previously the long course world record holder in the 200-meter freestyle, 100-meter butterfly, 200-meter butterfly, and 200-meter individual medley. Over the course of the Olympics, the World Championships, and the Pan Pacific Championships, he has earned 82 medals, 65 of which were gold, 14 silver, and three bronze.
