Chungwon Choue, the President of World Taekwondo, has stated that 2023 will be a very special year since the ruling body will be commemorating its 50th anniversary. The organization was established on May 28th, 1973, at its Kukkiwon headquarters in Seoul. Choue has been the organization’s president since 2004. In his New Year’s address, the South Korean leader cited World Taekwondo’s accomplishments over the previous 50 years, including its expansion to 212 National Federations and one Refugee Team, its inclusion in the Olympic program in Sydney in 2000, and its Paralympic debut in Tokyo in 2020.

The 50th anniversary of World Taekwondo will be celebrated in several ways, all with the theme “peace in mind, taekwondo at heart” for 2023. A gala honoring the top male and female competitors from each Olympic Games edition as well as the original National Federations will take place on May 28 at the World Championships in Baku. World Taekwondo, in collaboration with the THF, intends to invite other International Federations to the Hope and Dreams Sports Festival for Refugees and to establish a Hope and Dreams Sports Peace Corps. In his closing remarks, Choue expressed gratitude to the National Federations for their assistance and predicted that “2023 will truly be a special year as we lay the foundations for World Taekwondo’s centenary”.

Additionally, he mentioned the 25 World Championships, 13 Junior Championships, 5 Cadet Championships, 12 Poomsae Championships, and 9 Para Taekwondo Championships it has hosted and noted that it had been recognized as the leading International Federation on humanitarian activities. Choue also spoke about its activities implemented in 2022.

“We created many historic firsts in 2022, including the inaugural World Taekwondo Hall of Fame, Para taekwondo in the Grand Prix Series, and an electrifying World Taekwondo Demonstration Team’s performance at the ANOC [Association of National Olympic Committees] Awards. Taekwondo not only thrilled; we also inspired. In 2022, World Taekwondo and the Taekwondo Humanitarian Foundation (THF) organized the first-ever Hope and Dreams Refugee Taekwondo Championships in Amman, Jordan, with the participation of more than 200 youths and children from the Azraq and Za’atari refugee camps,” he said.

“With regard to the Olympic Solidarity scholarship program for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, taekwondo has the second highest number of scholarship holders with eight athletes including two from the Azraq refugee camp, ” Chungwon Choue said to Insidethegames.
