Tokyo Olympics: US swimming star Katie Ledecky clinches record sixth individual gold

United States’ swimming great Katie Ledecky won her record sixth individual gold at this Tokyo Olympics. This is the Olympian’s 10th Olympic medal, she had topped the podium in the women’s 800m freestyle.

Katie Ledecky, to this day, is undefeated when it comes to the 800-meter freestyle race. She’s competed for 11 years and holds her record. Ledecky touched the wall at 8:12.57. Ariarne Titmus of Australia won the silver and Simona Quadarella of Italy took the bronze. The American became the first female swimmer to win six individual golds. She is now just a few medals behind the legend, Michael Phelps who has a record of 13 individual gold.

Australia broke the Olympic record after winning the women’s 4×100 medley with timing of 3:51.60. Emma McKeon won her seventh medal in Tokyo Olympics after this win. The USA claimed Silver while bronze went to Canada. Penny Oleksiak also became Canada’s most-medalled Olympian. This is the seventh medal of her career.

Other swimming Gold medals at Tokyo Olympics

In the last swimming final at the Tokyo Aquatics Centre, Caeleb Dressel bagged his fifth gold medal at Tokyo Olympics, as the United States completed the men’s 4×100 medley. They also created a world record timing of 3:26.78. Dressel’s fly split was 49.03.

McKeon became the first female swimmer and the second woman in any sport to win seven medals at one Olympics. Out of the seven, four were gold, and the other three bronze.

Soviet gymnast Maria Gorokhovskaya is the other Olympian to have won seven medals. She claimed two golds and five silvers at the 1952 Helsinki Games.

“It still feels very surreal,” said McKeon, a 27-year-old from Brisbane. “It’s going to take a little bit to sink in. I’m very proud of myself.”

McKeon completed her own sweep of the freestyle sprints, touching in 23.81 to add the 50 title to her victory in the 100.
