Tokyo Olympics: PV Sindhu's encouragement made me cry, says Tai Tzu-Ying

World No 1 women’s singles badminton player Tai Tzu-Ying of Taiwan won the silver at the Tokyo Olympics. She lost the gold to China’s Chen Yufei in a closely-contested match.

Chen Yufei, who is currently world number two defeated Tai 21-18 19-21 21-18 with strategically placed smashes and a feather-light net game. The match with long and short, both kinds of rallies, close matches, keeping the spectators on the edge of their seats.

After the medal ceremony on Sunday, Tai Tzu-Ying revealed how PV Sindhu’s words of encouragement made her teary eye and cry a bit.

“PV Sindhu hugged me and told me I know you are sick but you did very well, but today was not your day,” wrote Tai Tzu-Ying on her Instagram.

“She held me in her arms and said she knew it all. That sincere encouragement made me cry,” added Tai.

Tai’s fans around the world had waited long for her to gold at the Olympics, having watched her take down some of the best for years but being medal-less in the Games.

She has hinted in the past that she may retire after Tokyo Olympics, even though she is only 27.

“I’ve been playing badminton for half my life so I’m just thinking about the rest,” Tai said.

India’s PV Sindhu followed up her silver from 2016 with a bronze at Tokyo 2020 on Sunday, paying tribute to her fans after beating China’s He Bing Jiao 21-13 21-15.

“A medal for the country, and at the Olympics is not so easy,” an emotional Sindhu said after the nearly hour-long match. “A lot of Indian fans showed me that love and support and I’m very, very thankful to each one of them.”
