India’s first-ever woman to compete in the sailing event, Nethra Kumanan finished 21st after the end of the third race at Tokyo Olympics. The race was won by L. Flem Hoest of Norway, with Germany and Greece at the second and third place respectively. If this performance has to be compared to how she did in the first and the second race, it is better by a huge margin.

Nethra Kumanan was in 27th place after two races at Tokyo Olympics. Nethra finished 33rd in the first race of the women’s laser radial before recovering a bit by taking the 16th spot in the second for an overall 27th place with 49 net points. In the first race, the young athlete finished 3:35 mins behind Spain’s Cristina Bajo, who came in at the first place. Greece came in second and Malaysia came in at the third spot.

She managed to be at the sixth spot at one point in time– at the second mark. However, she failed to maintain her position. She evetua;lly lost out to other leaders who won the race. Her performance though is commendable showing true signs of her potential. Kumaran’s 10th position till Mark 3 indeed gives a great show of promise from the 23-year old sailor.
