Ravi Kumar Dahiya confirms a medal in wrestling after reaching the final

Ravi Kumar Dahiya beat Nurislam Sanayev of Kazakhstan in the men’s freestyle 57 kg semifinal. He will face Uguev Zavur in the final.

Indian men’s freestyle wrestler, Ravi Kumar Dahiya, qualified for the final of the 57kg weight division and has assured India of its fourth medal at the Tokyo Olympics. The 23-year-old defeated the Kazakh Nurislam Sanayev via a victory by fall to confirm his slot in the final. Ravi will now face Uguev Zavur of ROC in the final.

The Indian found himself trailing 9-2 at one point in the match. Under such immense pressure, the Indian managed to turn the momentum and won the bout with just over 30 seconds remaining. While such a big deficit could have mentally crushed any athlete, but Ravi Kumar Dahiya is built differently. The Haryana lad maintained his calm under pressure and made a stunning comeback to bring down the deficit to two points, before eventually pinning the Kazakh to move into the final and assure a medal for India. Some world class wrestling was on display in the semifinal.

Nurislam dominated the entire contest in term of points, but Ravi was very much determined to progress into the final. He eventually won the contest by a fall. He pinned Sanayev onto the mat and managed to keep his opponent’s shoulders fixed to the mat.

Most importantly, did you know this is the first time in around 9 years that an Indian male has won an Olympic medal? Yes, it has been 3280 days since an Indian male won an Olympic medal. The last Indian man to win a medal at the Olympics was Sushil Kumar when he bagged the silver medal at the 2012 London Games.
