The Indian contingent continued to face massive disappointments in Tokyo Olympics 2020. The shooting contingent continued to struggle as they crashed out in the 10m air pistol and 10m air rifle mixed team events. Manu Bhaker, Saurabh Chaudhary, Divyansh Singh Panwar, Anjum Moudgil, Elevanil Valarivan, Deepak Kumar, Abhishek Verma and Apurvi Chandela all crashed out from the medal contention. The failure of the Indian shooting contingent was a huge setback as they look to better their Rio 2016 medals tally.

India’s challenge in Table Tennis ended with Sharath Kamal’s loss to Ma Long. Manika Batra and Sutirtha Mukherjee were eliminated on the previous day and with Sharath Kamal’s exit, the chances of a medal are now gone. Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty were also eliminated in heartbreaking circumstances and so was Sai Praneeth. Only PV Sindhu now has a chance for a medal. The hopes from Sailing are all but over with Vishnu Saravanan, Nethra Kumanan, KC Ganapathy, and Varun Thakkar all struggling. The only bright hope for India was the men’s hockey team winning 3-0 against Spain.

July 28 is a relatively low day for India in the Olympics. PV Sindhu will be in action while the India women’s hockey team will be aiming to keep their campaign afloat. Archers will be looking to keep their dream alive.

India’s quest for medals severely jolted

The Indian contingent for Tokyo Olympics 2020 has underperformed this week. Shooters were expected to fetch some medals but the 10m air pistol and 10m air rifle events have been disappointing. Saurabh Chaudhary and Manu Bhaker were expected to win medals in these two disciplines but they did not work out. Now, Bhaker’s hopes rest in the 25m pistol event along with Rahi Sarnobet.

In the 50m air rifle three positions, Sanjeev Rajput, Tejaswini Sawant, Aishwary Pratap Singh, and Anjum Moudgil will once again be aiming to give India glory.

PV Sindhu and wrestling remain the only events that can give India a potential medal. Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia will be in action in wrestling towards the fag end of the Olympics. There might still be some hope that India can register at least 2-3 medals and overhaul the tally of Rio in 2016. India’s best efforts were in 2012 London in which they won six medals. This included two silver and four bronze.

Sindhu is expected to reach the semi-final where she will have a tough time. But, apart from the shooters, India’s medal hopes are fading away very quickly in Tokyo Olympics 2020.
