Indian women's hockey team only need one victory to win its first Olympic medal, while boxer Lovlina Borgohain will also be in action on Wednesday.
Wednesday could turn out to be a massive day for India at Tokyo Olympics. The Indian women’s hockey team only need one victory to clinch its maiden medal at the Olympics. The women’s side, which will be brimming with confidence following its stunning quarterfinal win, will be up against World No. 2 Argentina in the semifinals on Wednesday. Earlier, Rani Rampal-led team stunned three-time Olympic gold medallists Australia in the quarterfinal. With momentum on its side, India will look to extend its three-game winning streak. On the other hand, Argentina have also been in fine form in Tokyo, winning four out of their six matches.
The winner from the semifinal match will contest for the gold medal, while the losing team will have an opportunity to clinch the bronze. The Netherlands and Great Britain clash with each other in the other semifinal. The other highlight of the day will see Indian boxer Lovlina Borgohain competing in the semifinal. She will be up against world champion Busenaz Surmeneli in the women’s 69kg (welterweight). Unlike the women’s hockey team, Lovlina has already assured herself a medal (bronze).
The Assam boxer outpunched Nadine Apetz (Germany) and Chen Nien-chin (Chinese Taipei) on her way to the semifinal. Another win on Wednesday for Lovlina will make her the most successful Indian boxer at the Olympics.
Meanwhile, three freestyle wrestlers Ravi Kumar, Deepak Punia and Anshu Malik will start their campaign on Wednesday morning, along with javelin throwers Neeraj Chopra and Shivpal Singh. Aditi Ashok and Diksha Dagar will also be in action when the women’s golf tournament tees off.
