Wrestler Ravi Kumar Dahiya’s quest for India’s second individual gold medal will dominate Thursday’s schedule for the country. After showing impressive resilience, grit, and determination in his semifinal bout to fight back from a huge deficit, Ravi Kumar will have a great chance to become the country’s second individual gold medallist. The 23-year-old will fight for top honours in the men’s 57kg freestyle wrestling. Besides, the Indian men’s hockey team will also be in contention for a medal. The hockey team can end the 41-year wait for an Olympic medal when it face Germany for bronze. The last time India won a medal was in the 1980 Moscow Olympic Games when the team led by V Baskaran won the eighth gold medal for the country.

On Wednesday, Ravi Kumar stormed into the final after registering impressive victories over Oscar Tigeros, Georgi Vangelov and Nurislam Sanayev. The two-time Asian champion from India will face two-time world champion Zaur Uguev of the ROC in the gold medal match. Ravi Kumar had lost to Uguev in the semi-finals of the 2019 world championships. If the 23-year-old wrestler wins gold, he will be the second after shooter Abhinav Bindra (Beijing 2008) to clinch an individual Olympic gold from the country.

Repechage round

Wrestler Deepak Punia, who also made it into the semi-final of the men’s freestyle 86kg, lost his bout. However, he still has a chance to win bronze when he faces the winner of the repechage. Meanwhile, Anshu Malik, who lost to eventual finalist Iryna Kurachkina in the round-of-16, also stands to compete for the bronze in the women’s 57kg freestyle via repechage.

The attention then shifts to the top-seeded wrestler in the women’s 53kg freestyle – Vinesh Phogat, who begins her Tokyo campaign on Thursday. She will take on Rio 2016 bronze medallist Sofia Mattsson.

Before the wrestlers take the mat, India’s female golfers will tee-off at the Kasumigaseki Country Club. After impressing on the opening day of women’s golf, Aditi Ashok will tee off along with compatriot Diksha Dagar. Aditi is tied on the second spot with Nelly Korda of the USA while Diksha is tied-56. Elsewhere, race walkers KT Irfan, Rahul Rohilla and Sandeep Kumar will also be in action.
