It was a big day for India at the Tokyo Olympics on Sunday as ace shuttler PV Sindhu confirmed India’s third medal at the Games this year. Sindhu has won the bronze medal in the women’s singles badminton event after defeating He Bing Jiao of China in what was a rather comfortable game for the Indian. Moving onto the field, the Indian men’s hockey team created history as they won 3-1 against Great Britain in the quarter-final. India has qualified for the semi-final of the hockey competition at the Olympics for the first time in 49 years. Even if they don’t win the semi-final match, it will still leave them with a chance to claim the bronze medal, which would still be an incredible achievement.

GOLFERS DISAPPOINT

It was a very disappointing day for India’s golfers at the Olympics on Sunday as Anirban Lahiri and Udayan Mane failed to impress. Mane had started the tournament poorly and never got into his rhythm. He was in the last place after the first round of play. At the end of the competition, Mane could only finish in a lowly 56th place. Lahiri, on the other hand, had started the competition brightly. However, he could not keep his momentum going and only finished in 42nd place.

FOUAAD MIRZA’S BRILLIANT DISPLAY

Indian Equestrian Fouaad Mirza might not have come home with a medal, but he delivered a brilliant performance in the sport. He came 22nd in the cross country individual round. It is a sport that is not really well known around the country, with many not knowing before the Olympics this year that it was actually something India would participate in. Mirza’s brilliant performance in the event is definitely something that fans back home have taken notice of.

SATISH CRASHES OUT

Indian boxer Satish Kumar failed to confirm a medal for India as he lost to Uzbekistan’s Bakhodir Jalolov. The scoreline, in the end, was not exactly tight as Jalolov won the match 5-0. All the rounds had the same score. Jalolov had scored a perfect 10 in all three rounds, while Kumar could only manage nine in each round. It was not as close in the ring as it might have looked at the end.

SINDHU WINS BRONZE

PV Sindhu proved her worth as one of the top shuttlers in the world yet again as she comprehensively won the bronze medal in the women’s individual badminton event. She beat China’s He Bing Jiao 2-0. Sindhu won the first set 21-13, and the second 21-15. It was a very comfortable win for the Indian and that makes it all the more impressive. She became the third athlete to confirm a medal for India in Tokyo after Mirabai Chanu and Lovlina Borgohain.

MEN’S HOCKEY TEAM IN SEMIS

The Indian men’s hockey team created history as they made it into the semi-final stage of the Olympics for the first time in 49 long years. They beat a difficult Great Britain side 3-1 in the quarter-final to progress. The scorers for India were Dilpreet Singh, Harmanpreet Singh, and Gurjant Singh. India will now have the tough task of facing a ruthless Belgium team in the semi-final which will be played on August 3.
