Ski Jumping, Four Hills Tournament 2022–23: Format for The Competition

The event is one of the most prestigious on the ski jumping calendar, with a format that differs from other World Cup events. While the top 50 competitors advance to the second day’s action in qualification, the event then shifts to a head-to-head format for the first round. The winner of each duel, along with the five best lucky losers, advances to the second and final round. The ski fliers are then ranked, with the athlete ranked 30th going first and the best jumper from the first round going last. The skier with the most points after the four individual competitions is the Four Hills champion.

To achieve an appropriate take-off speed, the height of the gate (the starting position on the ramp) is modified based on the conditions. The final score reflects this. The score is weighted lower because a higher gate encourages athletes to fly farther. Similarly, when a lower gate is used, points are added. When leaping with a favorable breeze, points are deducted, whereas when the wind impedes the jumpers, points are added. Ski jumpers’ suits are controlled and there is a minimal BMI (body mass index) for athletes to avoid undue and perhaps unhealthy weight loss.
