Shooter Chandro Tomar, affectionately known as “Shooter Dadi”, passed away due to COVID-19 at the age of 89. She was admitted to a hospital in Meerut on April 26 after she complained that she had difficulty in breathing.

“Mera saath chhoot gaya, Chandro kaha chali gayi (She has left me, Chandro where have you gone?),” said her sister-in-law Prakashi Tomar, who is also one of the oldest female sharpshooters in the world.

Tomar hailed from a small village called Baghpat in Uttar Pradesh, and was over 60 years when she picked up the gun for the first time. Her talent was such that she won many national competitions for veterans. Her feats ultimately inspired the Bollywood movie “Saand ki Aankh”.

Much loved by all, “Shooter Dadi’s” death was condoled by Union Ministers and actors, alike. All of them agree that it is a huge loss.

Shhoter Dadi’s Awards

During her shooting career, Tomar took part in a lot of competitions with her sister Prakashi Tomar, who is also one of the oldest female sharp shooters in the world.

Once she got hooked on the sport, she went on to win many medals at numerous competitions, all coming when Tomar was way above 60 years in age.

Shooter Dadi won many awards in the senior citizen category including Stri Shakti Sanman presented to her by the President of India himself.

As history would remember Shooter Dadi– She had picked up a rifle by chance, and never gave up on it again. It was just by chance when a younger member in the family expressed her interest in enrolling in the newly-built shooting range in their village.
