On his route to a decisive victory in the ongoing Olympic Selection Trials (OST) 1&2 for Rifle and Pistol at the Karni Singh Range on Thursday, Arjun Babuta broke the current finals world record (FWR) in men’s 10m air rifle. In the OST T1 final, 25-year-old Babuta—the winner of the Paris Olympics quota—brought home a stunning 254.0.

The score was 0.3 higher than the record established earlier this year at the Cairo World Cup by fellow finalist and India colleague Divyansh Singh Panwar. Nancy (women’s 10m air rifle), Varun Tomar (men’s 100m air pistol), and Rhythm Sangwan (women’s 10m air pistol) all won their respective OST T1 final matches.

In addition to 13 strokes that were 10.6 and above, Babuta’s score sheet included two flawless 10.9s. His lowest score of 10.0 occurred on the 21st shot, by which he had already built up a sizable lead over the opposition. He ultimately defeated 2022 world champion Rudrankksh Patil by 2.8 points (251.2). Third place went to Sri Karthik Sabari Raj (229.6).

Nancy also performed exceptionally well in the women’s 10m air rifle, winning the OST T1 final with ease. Although her score of 253.4 fell short of the global average by 0.6, it was enough to beat quota holder Mehuli Ghosh by 0.7 points (252.7). Third place went to Olympian Elavenil Valarivan (230.5).

Paris Quota holder Varun Tomar won the men’s 10m air pistol final with a score of 244.1, easily securing another victory. In the second race, Varun’s fellow Paris quota holder Sarabjot Singh (217.4) finished third, with Ravinder Singh (240.0) trailing him by 4.1 points. In the women’s division, Rhythm Sangwan is one of the three shooters who have made it to the trials for the 10m air pistol and 25m sports pistol.

Rhythm Sangwan achieved the top score in the Olympic shooting trials final round

Following her underwhelming performance in the sports pistol trials, she demonstrated strong abilities in the 10m air pistol shooting trial match. She achieved the greatest podium points possible in the finals by leading the entire competition after winning the qualification round on Wednesday with a score of 578. Her score of 243.5 put her a whopping 5.7 points ahead of Manu Bhaker, who came in second (237.8).

Third place went to reigning Asian Games champion Palak (217.5). Olympians Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar and Anjum Moudgil led the scoring charts in the men’s and women’s 50m rifle 3-positions OST T2 qualification round. Against his closest opponent, Swapnil Kusale, Aishwary was very impressive, scoring an incredible 595 to grab an eight-point lead (587).

Following the qualification round, Niraj Kumar (587), Chain Singh (585), and Akhil Sheoran (584) were ranked third, fourth, and fifth, respectively. Olympian Anjum Moudgil shot 589 in the women’s 50m rifle 3-positions OST T2 qualifying round. Sift Kaur Samra, who won gold in the Asian Games, followed with 587, followed by Shriyanka Sadangi (587), Nischal Singh (587), and Ashi Chouksey (585).
