As India continues to grapple with a deadly second wave of the coronavirus, reportedly several times worse than the initial one, athletes around the globe have taken to social media to express their concern, announce for help, and urge the citizens to stay as safe as possible. The latest sports personality to have done this is Jamaican sprinter and Olympic gold medallist Yohan Blake. He took to Twitter to urge the people of the country to stay safe and also tagged the official handles of the Indian Premier League (IPL) and the Board for Control of Cricket in India (BCCI). In the tweet, he mentioned that the country is one that he has grown to love and also encouraged people to work together in order to curtail the spread of the virus.

“Just want to take this time to send my love to India. I have been watching cricket over the years. I have grown to love the country so much. Wonderful people all around. I am begging everyone to please do what they can to stay safe. I know it may difficult but imagine if we work together (sic),” Blake tweeted along with a picture of his autograph.

It is no secret that the Olympian is a huge fan of the gentleman’s game and had earlier expressed his desire to play for the IPL franchise Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). He is one of several to have spoken out about the country that has been ravaged by the COVID-19 pandemic in recent months.

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Australian fast bowler Pat Cummins had earlier announced on Twitter that he would be donating $50,000 towards the country to help in its battle with the pandemic. Fellow countryman and former Australian and KKR bowler Brett Lee has also announced a donation of 1 bitcoin, which is equivalent to Rs 40 lakh, to help the country in its fight against the pandemic.

India reported more than 3 lakh new COVID-19 cases on Tuesday. It was the seventh consecutive day the country had reported cases in excess of 3 lakh. The death toll rose by 3,293 in the last 24 hours and over 2.6 lakh recoveries have been reported as per the data issued by the country’s health ministry.
