The Olympic 100m meter champion Lamont Marcell Jacobs said on Monday that he will return to competitive action in Berlin next February. The Italian has not raced since adding the 4*100m relay gold in Tokyo on August 6 to the individual crown he won five days earlier. He then went on to immediately end the season, opting not to participate in the five remaining meets of the lucrative Diamond League circuit, citing fatigue.

Jacobs manager Marcelo Magnani told Reuters at the time there were no injuries or other health reasons behind his break.

“It is simply that Marcell has given so much this year, all he had, so to insist (on competing) would only mean risking an injury,” he added.

Speaking at a book Launch in Rome, the 27-year-old announced he would compete at the ISTAF outdoor event at the Olympic stadium in Berlin on February 4.

Jacobs’ rise in the athletics world has been remarkable. He previously competed in the long jump till 2018 before shifting focus to the sprint event. Having turned to the track event only recently, he clocked under 10 seconds for the first time back in May and was not expected to challenge for a medal in Tokyo.

However, Jacobs surprised the whole world to secure the top position in the podium with his personal best timing of 9.80 seconds. American sprinter Fred Kerley won the silver medal while Canada’s Andre de Grasse clinched the bronze.

Jacobs was also part of the 4*100m relay team that pipped Great Britain on line to win the gold medal at the end of a thrilling race. He created history in August by becoming the first Italian ever to win an Olympic 100m crown. Therefore the fans would be excited to see him back in action after a gap of six-months.
