The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has been urged to select a chief executive officer (CEO) right away in order to restore order to the organization, per a request from the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The IOA elections that took place in December 2022 during which PT Usha was chosen as the new president had previously been acknowledged by the IOC. The newly drafted Constitution calls for the IOA to appoint a CEO or Secretary-General. However, the IOA has not yet happened. The IOC requested that the IOA move the appointment through quickly and choose a CEO right away.

Significance of the CEO

According to the new Constitution, the Indian Olympic Association was expected to choose a CEO who would undertake the tasks of the former Secretary General within a month of the new executive council taking over. A CEO has not been chosen even though the new IOA council assumed leadership on December 10, 2022. Kalyan Chaubey, the president of the All India Football Federation (AIFF) and joint secretary of the Indian Olympic Association, has been acting as CEO in the interim. The CEO will have no voting privileges while serving as an ex-officio member of the Executive Council.

The appointment of a CEO is critical for the Indian Olympic Association to maintain the organization’s seamless operation. The new CEO will be in charge of carrying out the duties of the previous secretary general, who was in charge of the day-to-day operations of the organization. The appointment is also necessary to assure compliance with the new Constitution, which was prepared by a Supreme Court-appointed body and approved by the International Olympic Committee.

In addition, the 140th IOC session will take place in Mumbai from October 15 to October 17, 2023, according to the International Olympic Committee. The new president and the election results were formally recognized by the IOC executive board. The IOC already decided that Mumbai will host its 2023 session, and it has now confirmed that choice. The IOC’s need for a CEO comes as the IOA prepares for the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.
