In the 2024 Archery World Cup’s qualification segment, Jyothi Surekha Vennam emerged as India’s most outstanding performer. The 27-year-old secured the silver position in the female compound category, tallying a score of 711, narrowly trailing Mexico’s Andrea Becerra who led with 713. Meanwhile, Aditi Gopichand Swami clinched the eighth position with a score of 704.

Further contributions came from Parneet Kaur, who achieved a score of 703, landing in the 14th slot, while Avneet Kaur secured the 23rd position with a score of 696. Together, Jyothi, Aditi, and Parneet’s elevated scores propelled the Indian female team to triumph, attaining first place in the team qualification with a cumulative score of 2118, thereby surpassing teams from South Korea and Mexico.

Ascending as top seeds for the upcoming rounds, the Indian women’s team’s ranking emanated from the combined scores of the leading trio. Contrastingly, in the men’s event on the opening day, no Indian archer ranked within the top-tier ten positions. The highest placement was earned by Abhishek Verma at 13th with a score of 708.

Priyansh closely followed, seizing the 14th place with a score of 707, while Prathamesh Bhalchandra Fuge and Rajat Chauhan, both with a score of 706, occupied the 18th and 19th positions, respectively. The leading scores of Abhishek, Priyansh, and Prathamesh culminated in a total of 2121, positioning the men’s team fourth in the compound category, after Korea, the USA, and France.

The apex individual scorers from the male and female divisions are designated to represent the country in the mixed-team bracket. Jyothi paired with Abhishek, currently stands second with a collective score of 1419—marginally below the leading Korean pair of Oh Yoohyun and Kim Jongho, who possess an aggregated score of 1422. This competition scaffolding constructs a scenario where India has yielded strong contenders for the forthcoming series in both individual and team formats.

More about Archery World Cup Stage 1 Shanghai

At the upcoming 2024 Archery World Cup in Shanghai, China, starting on Tuesday, Olympian Deepika Kumari will lead India’s contingent. The event, taking place from April 23-28, will see India compete with an archery squad consisting of eight men and eight women. Fans in India can catch all the action via live streaming.

Deepika Kumari, India’s top archer from the selection trials in March, will participate in the women’s recurve category. For the men’s recurve, India pins its hopes on Dhiraj Bommadevara—the country’s sole archer qualified for the Paris 2024 Olympics—alongside Olympians Tarundeep Rai and Pravin Jadhav. Atanu Das, an Olympian himself, did not make the cut this time.

The team competing in recurve also serves as the temporary team for the Paris 2024 Olympics, and their performance in the first two World Cup stages will determine who represents India in the third stage in Antalya from June 18 to June 23, which is also the last chance for recurve archers to qualify for the Paris Olympics. In compound archery, which is not part of the Olympic program, the Indian team boasts talent like world champion Aditi Gopichand Swami and world silver medalist Jyothi Surekha Vennam for the women.

The men’s team is just as strong with multiple Asian Games medalist Abhishek Verma and World Championship silver medalist Rajat Chauhan, joined by under-21 world champions Priyansh and Prathamesh Fuge. Victors in the individual categories at the World Cup will secure a spot in the Archery World Cup Final this October, set to take place in Tlaxcala, Mexico.
