Full strength Indian team announced for World Athletics Relays

The Athletics Federation of India  has announced a strong 20 member squad for the World Athletics Relays to be held in Chorzow, Poland on May 1-2. This will be the Indian teams first competitive international outing in nearly two years since the COVID-19 outbreak. The event will be a Tokyo Olympics qualification tournament. The new Indian sprint sensation S Dhanalakshmi has made it to the 4*100m realy team on the back of a strong performance at the recently concluded Federation Cup in Patiala.

The Indian women’s 4*100m relay team comprises of- Dutee Chand, Hima Das, S Dhanalakshmi, Archana Suseendran, Himashree Roy and  A T Dhaneshwari. The 23 year old Tamil Nadu sprinter Dhanalakshmi toppled the two sprint queens Dutee Chand and Hima Das in the 24th federation Cup. Dhanalakshmi beat Dutee Chand to gold with a timing of 11.39s in 100m. Both Dutee Chand and Dhanalakshmi have run sub- 11.50s time in the 100m this season. Dhanalakshmi along with World junior champion Hima Das and World University Games Gold medalist Dutee Chand will make a strong 4*100m women’s  relay team.

 “We are excited to get our athletes ready for their first international competition after the Covid-induced gap. The team will spend time training in Turkey before reaching Chorzow for the World Relays.” Said AFI President  Adille Sumariwalla.

The top eight teams in the World Athletics Relays will automatically qualify for the Tokyo Olympics 2021.

The team:

Men’s 4x400m relay: Amoj Jacob, Ayyasamy Dharun , Arokia Rajiv, Naganathan Pandi, Muhammed Anas Yahiya, Nirmal Noah Tom and Sarthak Bhambri.

Women’s 4x400m relay: Anjali Devi, MR Poovamma, Subha Venkatesh, Kiran,  R Revathi, VK Vismaya and Jisna Mathew.

Women’s 4x100m relay:, Archana Suseendran , Dutee Chand, S Dhanalakshmi, Hima Das,  Himashree Roy and AT Daneshwari.
