The National Olympic Committee of Bosnia and Herzegovina (OKBiH) has provided financial support to the Bosnia and Herzegovina Taekwondo Federation (BiHTF) as part of its effort to improve sport funding throughout the country. BiHTF President Samir Šarić commended volunteers and the sporting community for their contributions to progress, but emphasised the necessity for national financial help. He claimed that his government spent the least amount of money on sports in the Balkans and that he would seek for additional financing in the future.

Since leaving Yugoslavia and becoming an independent country at the Olympic Games in Barcelona in 1992, the country has not received an Olympic medal. Nedžad Husić’s  fifth-place finish in the men’s under-68 kilogram taekwondo competition at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics is Bosnia and Herzegovina’s greatest performance in the Games to date.

What BiHTF President, Samir Šarić, Had To Say

“We believe that systemic funding is among the priorities for the well-being and improvement of the entire sport, and we invite all sports federations in Bosnia and Herzegovina to provide support to the Olympic Committee of BiH. The financing of top sports needs to be resolved so that the athletes who represent the country at the most prestigious competitions have adequate conditions, and that they can focus on sports work and results, instead of having to think about whether they will be able to go to a certain competition at all”, Šarić stated.

He further added, “The OKBiH does a lot for sports and athletes, which is also this initiative that we must all stand by and support. We are ready to go to protests if necessary. We invest the least in the region and then we are surprised that we still do not have an Olympic medal. We are asking for an increase in the budget to the level of the European Union average of one percent, and the other demands listed at the OKBiH round table.”

Samir Šarić is a Bosnian-Herzegovinian retired football player. He has played for Radnik Hadžići, FK Sarajevo, Umeå FC, Løv-Ham and Sandefjord. He has played a total of 152 games as a forward in which he has scored 49 goals.
