In an impressive display of archery, Kim Woojin secured the highest ranking in the recurve men’s category at the Hyundai Archery World Cup’s opening event in Shanghai by shooting a remarkable 699 out of a possible 720 points for the 72-arrow, 70-meter round. This score is only bested by Brady Ellison’s world record of 702 and Woojin’s Olympic score of 700 from 2016.

Kim Woojin downplayed his achievement by simply stating that his focus was on the shot-by-shot process, enabling him to make fewer mistakes and maintain a tight arrow grouping. Lim Sihyeon topped the women’s recurve with a score of 683. Both team members are in fine form, mirroring the high standards expected as athletes eye the forthcoming Olympic Games. In the day’s events, Kim Woojin was coached by none other than Im Dong Hyun.

Hyun is the former record-holder for the first 699 score set at the London 2012 Games. Alongside Woojin, the competition saw two other male archers surpass the score of 690 – Mexico’s newly crowned Pan American Champion Matias Grande with 695, and India’s leading archer Dhiraj Bommadevara with 693, setting new personal and national records.

Halfway through the event, the leaderboard was unexpectedly led by 17-year-old Baptiste Addis from France, who managed an outstanding 349 at the mid-point mark. He had to stop due to his inability to maintain the pace, but he still managed to score 687 points in the end. This broke the old French record by three points, which was set by Thomas Chirault.

Lisa Barbelin set a new record for France at Archery World Cup Stage 1

Also, Lisa Barbelin, a French archer, scored 678 points in the women’s recurve qualifying, which is a new record for France. She took the second spot. Addis was elated with his personal best, attributing it to his dedication over the winter and his concentration on his shooting technique. An encouraging sign for the French team preparing for the Paris Olympics in three months.

As for the Korean women’s team, led by Lim Sihyeon, their performance is also central to the narrative with Paris 2024 on the horizon. Lim’s role in guiding the relatively less experienced team is significant, and her results from the event look promising as she claimed the top individual seed.

Overall, the Korean archers dominated, clinching the top seed in both individual and team categories for recurve women, signaling a strong start for the season. The Shanghai event is set to progress with recurve team eliminations on the following Thursday morning and compound eliminations in the afternoon.
