Tokyo Olympics -bound Anshu Malik withdrew from the Poland Open after she complained of catching a fever. she is kept in isolation till her Covid-19 test report comes.

According to the PTI report, Anshu reported for weigh-in for the 57kg category on Friday morning. She complained of having a fever. It was then suggested she withdraws from the competition.

“Anshu did not want to miss the competition but as a precautionary measure she has been isolated and has given a sample to confirm if she is infected with coronavirus or not,” a source in the Indian camp told PTI.

“It does not look like Covid-19 since she has been in good shape since landing in Warsaw. But such are the times that you can’t risk, so she is being tested.”

Anshu’s parents had contracted the virus last month and till the time they recovered, she and her younger brother were isolated in a hotel in Rohtak. She had come back home only after they recovered.

Anshu, 19, qualified for the Tokyo Games through the Asian Olympic Qualifier, held in Almaty in April this year. Anshu is the second Indian to pulled out of the last Ranking Series event before the Tokyo Olympics starts.

Earlier, Deepak Punia had withdrawn from the men’s freestyle 86kg competition due to an elbow injury. Punia will remain with the team till July 5 for the training camp.

India have so far won a silver medal through Tokyo-bound Ravi Dahiya in the men’s 61kg free style competition.

Poland Open: Who else made it

Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat reached the 53kg final of the Poland Open in Warsaw on Friday after securing two victories in very contrasting matches. Phogat had to face 2019 World bronze medal winner Ekaterina Poleshchuk in her opening match, followed by America’s Amy Ann Fearnside. Phogat’s performance in the Polish wrestling competition is an amazing sign for India’s medal aspirations at the upcoming Tokyo Olympics. She seems to have firmly overcome her 2016 heartbreak and is one of the favourites to win a medal at this year’s Games. Phogat will now set her eyes to winning her third gold medal this year. She had won the previous two in Matteo Pellicone in March, and the Asian Championship in April.
