NHL action takes place at the UBS Arena on Thursday between the Florida Panthers and New York Islanders. Following 58 victories, the Florida Panthers are aiming for a fourth consecutive trip to the playoffs. The New York Islanders made the playoffs in three of the previous four years and won 37 games last season.
Since only Austin Czarnik, Andy Greene, and Zdeno Chara left the team, the New York Islanders essentially retain their entire roster from the previous season. Hudson Fasching, Alexander Romanov, and Dennis Cholowski are the three defenseman who the Islanders sign. The Islanders made the playoffs three seasons in a row before to last year, so it is obvious that they are counting on it being an exception. Given what we saw, Ilya Sorokin has the potential to be an excellent goaltender; thus, improving on what he was last season would go a long way. The Islanders struggle to generate consistent offense, but they are a tough group that plays defense and most nights doesn’t lose itself.
The Florida Panthers had a hectic offseason as they bid farewell to Mason Marchment, Ben Chiarot, Claude Giroux, MacKenzie Weegar, and Jonathan Huberdeau. Players like Colin White, Matthew Tkachuk, Michael Del Zotto, Rudolfs Balcers, and Calle Sjalin were acquired by the Panthers. After having the best season in team history, it’s strange to watch a team like the Panthers completely overhaul their squad. With that said, Aleksander Barkov, Tkachuk, and Aaron Ekblad represent an overwhelmingly high level of quality. The Panthers are still in the mix for the cup, assuming Spencer Knight can eventually take over as the starting goalkeeper. This season, the Panthers will be intriguing and entertaining to watch.
