An interconference game takes place in the first week of the NHL season when two clubs begin play in the Steel City. The Arizona Coyotes are traveling across the nation to play the Pittsburgh Penguins on Thursday night. Arizona had a 25-50-7 record at the end of the 2017 season, finishing last in the Central Division and missing the playoffs for the ninth time in the previous ten years.
Despite finishing third in the Metropolitan Division with a record of 46-25-11 the previous year, Pittsburgh was defeated by the Rangers in the opening round of the playoffs in seven games. In the last 10 encounters between the clubs, the Penguins had a 9-0-1 record.
Due to Arizona’s position in the Central Division and the Western Conference as a whole, they got off to a poor start and never really got going. The Coyotes didn’t make any notable moves in the offseason’s free agent market, instead opting to re-sign Nick Bjugstad and sign Josh Brown, Troy Stecher, and Jon Gillies to contracts. In smaller transactions, Arizona also acquired Patrik Nemeth from the Rangers and Zack Kassian from Edmonton.
Pittsburgh had a rollercoaster season last year, finishing with 103 points to place third in the Metropolitan Division. The Penguins had a chance to advance further in the playoffs after taking a 3-1 series lead against the Rangers in the first round. However, they gave up after losing the next three games, including Game 7 in overtime.
