The Montreal Canadiens will take on Toronto Maple Leafs at Bell Centre (Montreal) in the NHL Preseason game on October 3. Martin St. Louis, the head coach of the Montreal Canadiens, is stepping up his assessment process by pairing important prospects with seasoned NHL players against the Ottawa Senators. The Canadiens will field a very intriguing lineup against the Senators on Saturday night after making a sizable third round of cuts that saw them dismiss 23 players from camp. The majority of those players will be joining the Laval Rocket Training camp this weekend. Jonathan Drouin, Mike Hoffman, Mike Matheson, and Chris Wideman are among the prominent veterans in the lineup, but what matters more is who head coach Martin St. Louis has lined up next to them.
This preseason, Owen Beck will once again be charged with centering the top line for the Canadiens, between Drouin and Hoffman. The 18-year-old is making the most of his training camp experience to prove to the Montreal Canadiens management staff that, while not being quite ready for the NHL just yet, he won’t be for long. Drouin and Hoffman aren’t known for their two-way play, but they can definitely support Beck’s offensive inventiveness, so their defense will be tested. In contrast, the Canadiens are constantly surrounding Beck with offensive NHL talent because they want to determine just how close he is to becoming a solid NHL-calibre player. Nick Suzuki’s slight ailment has provided Beck with the opportunity to take center stage and showcase his abilities. He’ll likely be utilized throughout the game by St. Louis tonight.
