Bowen Byram was born on June 13, 2001. He is a Canadian professional ice hockey defenceman currently playing for the Colorado Avalanche of the National Hockey League (NHL). He was selected fourth overall by the Avalanche in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft. His parents are Stacey and Shawn Byram (His father, Shawn Byram, was a professional ice hockey player).

Early Life and start to play hockey

Bowen Byram began his hockey journey under the guidance of his father, Shawn Byram, who was also an NHL player. He joined the Lethbridge Golden Hawks of the Alberta Major Bantam Hockey League (AMBHL) at the age of 12. Byram’s impressive play in the AMBHL, including being the top-scoring defenseman drew attention.

Junior Career

He was selected third overall by the Vancouver Giants of the Western Hockey League (WHL) in the 2016 WHL Bantam Draft. Byram recorded notable achievements, including being named the WHL Rookie of the Month and WHL Western Conference Rookie of the Year. He broke several records during his WHL career, including most goals by a defenseman in a season for the Giants. He was recognized as the CHL Top Draft Prospect Award winner. He  got selected fourth overall by the Colorado Avalanche in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft.

Professional Career

He made his NHL debut with the Colorado Avalanche on January 21, 2021, against the Los Angeles Kings. He faced challenges in his rookie season, including concussions and a COVID-19 diagnosis, which affected his playing time. He contributed to the Avalanche’s 2022 Stanley Cup victory. He has signed a two-year, $7.7 million contract extension with the Avalanche in July 2023 as a restricted free agent.

International Success

Byram represented Canada in various international tournaments, winning gold medals at the 2018 Hlinka Gretzky Cup and the 2020 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships. He was named to the Media All-Star team at the 2021 World Junior Championship.

He enjoys outdoor activities and recreational hunting with his father. He also follows and enjoys watching baseball and basketball.
