Born on March 20, 2001, in Bedford, New York, Zegras has quickly become a household name among hockey enthusiasts. Selected ninth overall by the Anaheim Ducks in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft, Zegras has embarked on a remarkable journey that has seen him rise through the ranks and establish himself as one of the league’s most promising talents.

Early Life

Trevor Zegras was born to proud parents Gary and Julie and his journey into the world of hockey began at a tender age. At just three years old, he laced up his skates and took his first strides on the ice. His early years were shaped by his involvement in the Rising Stars youth program where he had the opportunity to play alongside his cousins fostering his love for the game. While growing up in New York, Zegras developed a deep admiration for the New York Rangers. However, it was the playing style of Patrick Kane from the Chicago Blackhawks that truly captivated his imagination. He studied Kane’s every move and sought to emulate the Blackhawks’ star in his own game.

Collegiate Career

Zegras’ path to professional hockey took an important turn when he committed to playing college hockey at Boston University. During his time with the Terriers, he honed his skills and showcased his immense potential. However, it was evident that Zegras was destined for bigger things, and his journey to the NHL was set in motion. On March 27, 2020, he signed a three-year entry-level contract with the Anaheim Ducks officially marking the beginning of his professional career.

American Hockey League(AHL)

With his signature blend of speed, creativity, and hockey IQ, Trevor Zegras quickly made his presence felt in the professional ranks. He was assigned to the Ducks’ American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate. The San Diego Gulls to gain valuable experience during the 2020-21 season. Zegras wasted no time making an impact as he made his professional debut on February 5, 2021. In a memorable debut performance, he tallied one goal and two assists in a 4-1 victory over the Bakersfield Condors.

Just weeks later, Zegras received the call he had been eagerly awaiting. On February 22, 2021, he made his NHL debut against the Arizona Coyotes a momentous occasion in his young career. It didn’t take long for Zegras to leave his mark on the league. On March 18, 2021, he scored his first NHL goal in a thrilling 3-2 overtime win against the Arizona Coyotes. This achievement was made even more special as fellow rookie Jamie Drysdale also scored in the same game. Making them the youngest pair in NHL history to each score their first NHL goals within a mere 2 minutes and 30 seconds of each other.

A Breakout Season

The 2021-22 season was a true breakout year for Trevor Zegras. He cemented his place in the Ducks’ lineup and became an integral part of their offensive core. Teaming up with Sonny Milano and Rickard Rakell, Zegras consistently demonstrated his playmaking abilities and scoring prowess. On December 7, 2021, he astounded fans and opponents alike with a never-before-seen lacrosse-style assist to Sonny Milano during a game against the Buffalo Sabres. This highlight-reel play only added to his growing reputation as a dynamic and creative force on the ice.

By December 2021, Zegras had recorded an impressive 22 points in just 27 games making him one of the league’s top-scoring rookies. His average ice time of 17 minutes per game highlighted the trust the coaching staff had in his abilities. His remarkable performances did not go unnoticed as he found himself on the NHL All-Star Game fan vote ballot a testament to his growing popularity among fans.

Recognition and Honors

Trevor Zegras’ contributions to the Ducks did not go unrewarded. In December 2021, he was named the NHL Rookie of the Month after tallying 11 points in nine games. Although he was not nominated for the Calder Memorial Trophy, awarded to the NHL’s rookie of the year, his impact on the league was undeniable. His first full season in the NHL saw him amass an impressive 23 goals and 38 assists, establishing himself as one of the league’s premier young talents.

In August 2022, Trevor Zegras received yet another honor that solidified his status as a rising star in the NHL. He was chosen as the cover athlete for the video game NHL 23, sharing the spotlight with fellow athlete Sarah Nurse. This recognition not only celebrated his on-ice achievements but also highlighted his appeal beyond the rink.
