The Utah Jazz will have a familiar face on the sidelines when they visit Atlanta to play the Hawks on Tuesday night. This game will be the first time the Jazz face their former coach, Quin Snyder, since he was hired by Atlanta one year ago after the Hawks fired then-head coach Nate McMillan midseason. Snyder was the Jazz’s head coach from 2014-22, leading the team to a 372-264 record and six playoff appearances in eight years.

During his final six seasons as head coach, Utah had the third-highest winning percentage in the NBA, going 294-178 (.623) with the combination of Snyder, Donovan Mitchell, and Rudy Gobert.

Snyder stepped down while still under contract after the 2021-22 season and was replaced in Utah by Will Hardy. He was quickly hired by the Hawks on Feb. 26, 2023, signing a five-year contract.

Key matchups

Snyder has the second-highest number of wins as a Jazz coach, behind only the late Hall of Fame coach Jerry Sloan. As Atlanta’s coach this season, Snyder has led the Hawks to a 25-32 record, which puts them in 10th place in the Eastern Conference.

The Hawks are coming off a 109-92 victory over the Orlando Magic on Sunday, ending a three-game losing streak. Dejounte Murray stepped up in the absence of Trae Young, scoring 25 points, dishing out 11 assists, and grabbing nine rebounds.

The Jazz have had some defensive struggles this season as they rebuild after losing Snyder, Mitchell, and Gobert. However, they showed improvement on Sunday. Lauri Markkanen scored 26 points, Jordan Clarkson had 22 points and 10 assists, John Collins contributed 20 points, and Collin Sexton added 16 points and 10 assists to help Utah defeat the San Antonio Spurs 128-109, ending a five-game losing streak.

The Jazz held the Spurs to a season-low 18 points in the first quarter and capitalized on 20 San Antonio turnovers, scoring 34 points off those turnovers.
