Formula 1 will introduce a brand new sprint qualifying format in the 2021 season, it was announced on Monday. Two European and one non-European venue will feature the new format. The exact locations will be announced in due course. Sprint Qualifying will see the drivers battle over 100km on Saturday afternoons on Grand Prix weekends. The result will then decide the starting grid for Sunday’s Grand Prix.

Additionally, the top three finishers in Saturday’s sprint qualifying will receive points. Three points will be given for first place, two points for second and one point for third.

It is a departure from the current qualification method, which features three rounds. Five drivers each are eliminated in Q1 and Q2, with the top 10 then vying for pole position.

“We are excited by this new opportunity that will bring our fans an even more engaging race weekend in 2021,” said Formula 1 President and CEO Stefano Domenicali.

“Seeing the drivers battling it out over three days will be an amazing experience. I am sure the drivers will relish the fight.”

‘Delighted that teams support sprint qualifying’

FIA president Jean Todt, meanwhile, said that he was delighted at the new plan.

“I am delighted that all the teams supported this plan, and it is a testament to our united efforts to continue to engage our fans in new ways while ensuring we remain committed to the heritage and meritocracy of our sport,” said FIA president Jean Todt.

“I am pleased to see that Formula 1 is seeking new ways to engage with its fans and enlarge the spectacle of a race weekend through the concept of Sprint Qualifying.

“It was made possible thanks to the collaboration between the FIA, Formula 1, and all of the teams.

The 2021 season is only two races old as of this writing. Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton won the season opener at Bahrain. However, Red Bull’s Max Verstappen won the second race at Imola.
