Formula 1 will not be returning to Singapore for the 2021 season. The organisers of the Singapore GP called off the race due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This will be the second straight year that the race will not take place due to the pandemic. Last year’s curtailed season also took place without a visit to the pictureseque night-time Grand Prix.

Colin Syn, deputy chairman of the Singapore GP, said the decision had not been taken lightly.

“We understand that our fans were looking forward to another edition of the Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix,” he said.

“To cancel the event for a second year is an incredibly difficult decision, but a necessary one in light of the prevailing restrictions for live events in Singapore.

“We would not be able to deliver a full event experience fans have come to expect over the years, while safeguarding the health and safety of our fans, contractors, volunteers and staff.

“Ultimately, we have to be responsible, cautious and prudent as safety is our number one concern.”

Is this the first race to be affected by COVID-19 this year?

No. The Canada GP was called off due to issues surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic. People arriving into the country would be expected to undergo a hard quarantine, something that isn’t possible given F1’s packed calendar.

This race was replaced by the Turkish Grand Prix. However, that race was also called off due to a surge in Turkey’s coronavirus cases.

There will now be two races held in Austria, just like at the start of last year’s delayed season.

Will the Singapore GP be replaced?

It stands to reason the race will, in fact, be replaced. However, what venue chooses to have another Grand Prix as of now remains unclear.

A return to Turkey later in the year is an option, as is a return to China. Further reports suggest a double weekend in Austin, Texas where the US GP takes place.
