The world of motorsport was left shocked and reeling after the news of 19-year-old rider Jason Dupasquier’s tragic death broke on Sunday. The Swiss rider was competing in Moto3 at the qualifying of the Italian Grand Prix (GP). Duspasquier was involved in a multi-rider accident at the end of the race as the FIM Medical Intervention Vehicles arrived at the spot immediately to provide medical assistance to those involved in the crash. He was urgently airlifted to the Careggi Hospital in Florence. Initially, it was reported that the 19-year-old’s condition was stable. However, the FIM later said that Dupasquier was in a very serious condition. Eventually, the Swiss rider succumbed to his injuries. He joined a long list of tragic deaths in motorcycle racing history, quite a few of which have happened in recent history.

Here are some of the most tragic motorcycle racing accidents in recent history.

Luis Salom: The Spanish rider was met with a cruel end ahead of the 2016 Catalan Grand Prix of Moto2. In a practice accident at the Circuit de Catalunya, Salom was involved in a high speed accident. His bike crashed against the air fence and flew upwards. Salom let go of the bike and slid underneath which resulted in him being directly in the path of the crashing bike. He was rushed to the hospital but passed away while undergoing surgery.

Marco Simoncelli: The Italian rider was met with his end after a horrific accident involving him, Colin Edwards, and Valentino Rossi. He was involved in an accident at the 2011 Malaysian Grand Prix where he lost control of his vehicle and started to slide towards the gravel. However, the tires regained traction and the Italian was unexpectedly brought into the path of Edwards and Rossi. The two could not stop or change course in time as Edwards hit Simincelli’s lower back and Rossi his head. He succumbed to his injuries less than an hour after the accident.

Shoya Tomizawa: The Japanese rider was involved in an accident at the Moto2 San Marino Grand Prix. He lost control of his bike and fell at a fast right-hand corner, after which he was hit by the vehicles of Scott Redding and Alex de Angelis. He suffered cranial, thoracic, and abdominal trauma, and passed away at the age of 19.

Daijiro Kato: The Japanese suffered severe injuries after a crash at the 2003 Moto GP Japanese Grand Prix. He crashed into the wall near the Casio Triangle at the Suzaka Circuit at 200 kmph, sustaining severe head, neck, and chest injuries that resulted in his eventual death.

Ivan Palazzese: The Venezuelan rider was met with a racing accident at the 1989 German Grand Prix at Hockenheimring. He was closely tailing Andreas Preining when the latter’s engine ran into some trouble and abruptly slow down, causing Palazzese to crash into him. The Venezuelan was then struck by the bikes of Bruno Bonhuil and Fabio Barchitta, and passed away before he could be taken to any medical facility.

Norman Brown/Peter Huber: The 1983 British Grand Prix at Silverstone witnessed two tragic deaths as a result of a single accident. Initially, the race was going fine until the rain started coming down and the riders’ vision became impaired. Norman Brown had slowed down, reportedly due to mechanical issues, and was crashed into from behind by Peter Huber who could not see the rider due to the rain. The duo eventually passed away due to the injuries they sustained.
