The Asian Kabaddi Championship 2023 will take place in Busan, South Korea, from June 27 to June 30. After a six-year hiatus, the continental kabaddi competition will resume. The most recent iteration took place in Gorgan, Iran, in 2017. Since the competition’s inception in 1980, teams from different Asian nations, including Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, and Iran, have participated in the championship. With seven gold medals from eight editions, the Indian men’s kabaddi team is the most successful side in the tournament’s history. In the Kangar, Malaysia, competition in 2003, Iran took first place.

India defeated Pakistan 36–22 in the 2017 championship game to retain their title. At the upcoming Asian Kabaddi Championship in 2023 in Busan, Republic of Korea, the Indian team will be led by legendary raiders Naveen Kumar and Pawan Sehrawat. For the continental kabaddi competition, which will be held from June 27–30 after a six-year hiatus, India named a 12-person team. The squad does not include Pardeep Narwal, who holds the record for most raids in the renowned Pro Kabaddi League. Former Indian kabaddi team captain and all-arounder Deepak Niwas Hooda was also not selected. India’s arch-rival Pakistan too won’t be competing in the event.

Players not selected in the team

At the Patliputra Sports Complex in Patna, Bihar, last week, the trials to choose the Indian Kabaddi team for the Asian Kabaddi Championship were held. Surender Gill, Surender Nada, Girish Maruti Ernak, Siddharth Desai, Maninder Singh, Ravinder Pahal, and Mahender Singh are a few other well-known players who didn’t make the Indian team. Along with veteran raiders Naveen Kumar and Pawan Sehrawat, the attack will be strengthened by Arjun Deshwal, the top raider from PKL season 9.

Following a season-ending injury that prevented him from playing in the PKL, Pawan Sehrawat will be making his comeback. Surjeet Singh and Nitesh Kumar, two seasoned players, will support the defense. Along with all-arounder Nitin Rawal, notable defenders Sunil Kumar, Parvesh Bhainswal, and Vishal Bhardwaj made the kabaddi team. Bhaskaran Edachery, a former head coach of India, will oversee the national kabaddi team. A couple of other coaches have been named: Ashan and Sanjeev Kumar. With seven gold medals from the eight tournaments so far, the Indian kabaddi team is the most successful side in the tournament’s history.
