After having won the first game, Team India faced a defeat in the second game against the hosts, New Zealand. Amy Satterthwaite’s quickfire 75, Amelia Kerr’s all-round display (50, 3-56) and Lea Tahuhu’s stunning spell of 10-2-17-3 helped hosts New Zealand to beat India comfortably by 62 runs in Hamilton on Thursday. As far as India’s performance is concerned, Pooja Vastrakar’s career-best 4-34 was quite instrumental along with Harmanpreet Kaur’s quickfire a 63-ball 71 as well.

The fifties from Satterthwaite (75) and Amelia Kerr gave the hosts’ a strong start with the bat after being put in to bat first. Despite losing Suzie Bates early to a run out from Vastrakar. After that, both Sophie Devine and Amelia Kerr brought up the team’s first fifty in the powerplay only. However, Vastrakar struck soon after by removing the New Zealand captain who got out on 35. Amelia then stitched a 67-run partnership with Satterthwaite before Gayakwad trapped her LBW.

However, Amy Satterthwaite took the charge from there on and New Zealand went past 150 in the 28th over and she scored her 50 in 60 balls. Later, Satterthwaite broke the shackles of boundaries with a hattrick of boundaries against the offspinner but Vastrakar returned and turned the tables as well. She first dismissed Amy on 75 and, an over later, removed Tahuhu and Jess off successive deliveries to eventually finish with 10-0-34-4 as well.

Meanwhile, Katey Martin quickly added 41 runs, became the veteran pacer Jhulan Goswami’s record-equalling 39th World Cup victim as well. However, they lost their final five wickets for an addition of just 38 runs in the final eight overs, posting a total of 260/9.

While chasing, India got off to a shaky start with three left-handers in the top-order. Pacers Tahuhu and Jess Kerr left them struggling at 26/2 after their powerplay. With the inability to rotate the strike, India managed only 50 runs in the 20 overs and managed to put up 100 only by the end of the 30th. However, Mithali Raj could manage a slow 56-ball 31, and after her dismissal, Richa Ghosh too got out on a duck.

It wasn’t until vice-captain Harmanpreet Kaur brought up her 54-ball fifty that India started scoring a bit quickly with some fireworks. However, with 110 needed off the final eight overs with three wickets in hand, Harmanpreet Kaur soon took on the bowlers with two sixes and as many fours of a massive 20-run over from Jess Kerr.

But it lasted only for that over as Amelia Kerr removed her soon after. Jhulan Goswami and Meghna Singh hit a few big shots but they were not enough as India fell 62 short to the total as well.

Brief scores:

New Zealand 260/9 in 50 overs (Amy Satterthwaite 75, Amelia Kerr 50; Pooja Vastrakar 4-34) beat India 198 in 46.4 overs (Harmanpreet Kaur 71; Lea Tahuhu 3-17, Amelia Kerr 3-56) by 62 runs.
