“We will be ready,” Aston Martin said in response to a report that their 2022 challenger won’t be on track at the Spanish test. After a disappointing seventh place finish in the Formula One Constructors’ Championship last season, team owner Lawrence Stroll and his drivers Sebastian Vettel and Lance Stroll are hoping that this year’s brand new cars will put Aston Martin in the fight for best of the rest.

Aston Martin’s workforce has grown since Stroll purchased the team in 2018 and invested heavily in it – but that isn’t the issue. According to a report in PlanetF1.com, there is “deepening resentment” in the factory following the departure of Otmar Szafnauer, who was replaced by Mike Krack, and a source told the publication that the small but efficient workforce has grown to a ‘far larger entity of what appears to be headless chickens.’

‘Miles behind’

As a result, the development of the team’s 2022 car has been hampered. This year’s Formula One cars are all-new, with teams spending much of last season devoting all of their resources to learning the new rules. However, the source reportedly claimed that the Aston Martin F1 car is “miles behind,” and that “if it makes the first test at Barcelona on February 23, everyone will be so surprised you’ll hear cheers from outer space.” Aston Martin, on the other hand, has denied this.

“Work on our 2022 vehicle is making good progress and we will be ready for the first winter test in Barcelona,” a spokesperson for the team said.

On February 23, the new cars are expected to hit the track for the first time, with the first group shakedown taking place behind closed doors at the Circuit de Catalunya. The first and only official pre-season test, which will be held at Bahrain’s Sakhir circuit from March 10-12, will follow that three-day event. The season kicks off a week later with the Bahrain Grand Prix.

Aston Martin’s decision to clone Mercedes’ car in 2020 and 2021, given that it was a continuation of the previous season, has proven to be a long-term benefit for the Silverstone team, according to Andy Green, the team’s technical officer.
