George Russell’s first Formula 1 victory has won the 2022 Moment of the Year Award presented by Bang & Olufsen.

After a difficult season with the W13, the British star won his first world championship grand prix at Interlagos in Brazil, alongside Lewis Hamilton. The victory, which came a day after Russell overtook Max Verstappen to lead the sprint race, was his 81st GP start and moved him up to fourth in the drivers’ standings. The Autosport Award, which is open to memorable moments from international-level motorsport and returns after a one-year sabbatical, was presented on December 4th at the Autosport Awards at Grosvenor House on Park Lane.

Russell’s moment triumphed over Verstappen breaking F1’s season-wins record in Mexico, Ross Chastain’s NASCAR Cup wall ride at Martinsville, and Nyck de Vries scoring points for Williams on his F1 debut at Monza. The 1989 McLaren Autosport BRDC Award winner, David Coulthard, was on hand to give the Award to his 2014 counterpart Russell. “It was a wonderful moment for me personally, the trip that the team had been on in that [2022] season,” the 24-year-old said of his Interlagos breakthrough.
Other expert-judged awards include the Aston Martin Autosport BRDC Young Driver of the Year Award, the Gold Medal for lifetime legacy, the Gregor Grant Award for lifetime achievement, Motorsport Promoter of the Year, and Motorsport Games’ Esports Team of the Year. The Autosport Williams Engineer of the Future award has also been reinstated for 2022. International Racing Driver of the Year presented by Pirelli, International Rally Driver of the Year, British Competition Driver of the Year, Rookie of the Year, International Racing Car of the Year presented by Blink Experience, Rally Car of the Year, National Driver of the Year, and Esports Driver of the Year presented by Pirelli are among the other categories decided by fan voting.
