Response from Russell to 'horrendous' Zhou collapse was merely a human response.

The "horrendous" Silverstone incident involving Zhou Guanyu, according to Mercedes Formula 1 driver George Russell, elicited "a human reaction as opposed to a racing driver one."

Russell tagged Pierre Gasly’s AlphaTauri, which was in their path as they crossed the starting line for the British Grand Prix, causing it to collide with Zhou’s Alfa Romeo, which then swiftly flipped onto its rollhoop and sped through the gravel trap. Then, it crashed through the tyre barrier and came to rest between that wall and the track debris railing enclosing a grandstand with a view. Russell, who had stopped his damaged W13 in the runoff, rose from his wreckage and went to try to help the rescue attempts while Zhou was trapped in the debris and was treated by marshals and F1’s medical intervention team.

Russel reaction

In a reflection interview for his first season as a works Mercedes driver, Motorsport.com questioned Russell about what had been going through his mind at that precise moment. Russell responded, “When you see an incident like this, at the end of the day, there are only 20 Formula 1 drivers, and you know how it feels inside that cockpit. “It’s rather claustrophobic wearing three layers of clothing, a helmet, gloves, and boots, with a radio plug-in and a water bottle in your mouth. “When you see a car flying through the air, and land in a position, which is essentially trapped, that’s a pretty horrendous place to be in.

Conclusion

The F1 rookie was extricated during the nearly hour-long red flag for Zhou’s incident and sent to the Silverstone medical facility for examinations before being deemed healthy and discharged. Both drivers were absent from the restarted race, which was eventually won by Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz. Alex Albon, who was also eliminated in the same collision and required a trip to the hospital for additional testing before being released, was rear-ended by Sebastian Vettel’s Aston Martin while braking in the aftermath of the initial collision.
