Towards the closing stages of the Bahrain Grand Prix last week, Red Bull Racing were expecting a second-place finish for reigning world champion Max Verstappen and a fourth-place finish for Sergio Perez. Both cars were set to score big points and looked comfortable at one point. However. the last four laps changed everything for the Milton-Keynes-based outfit. With only three laps to go, Verstappen complained of losing power and the world champion had to retire the car. Then, on the final lap, Perez complained of a similar problem, and his car spun around and just stopped dead in the middle of the track. The team came away with zero points, confused over what went wrong.

Finally, they have been able to pinpoint the problem, after days of investigating the car. It was a problem with the fuel tank. As per a report in Motorsport.com, a spokesperson for Red Bull said that the issues in both cars were due to a vacuum created in the fuel system. What that means is that although the cars had enough fuel, it was not reaching the engine. There have been speculations that the drivers had simply run out of fuel but Red Bull rubbished them.

Lack of fuel pressure

“Both cars suffered from a lack of fuel pressure last weekend. The correct amount of fuel was in both cars, but a vacuum prevented the pumps from drawing fuel and delivering it to the engine,” the team’s spokesperson reportedly said. They also suggested that the necessary steps had been taken and no problems were expected for the Saudi Arabian GP.

“We’ve taken the necessary steps to correct this issue and we expect no problems this weekend,” the spokesperson added.

Red Bull’s engine failures saw Ferrari take 1-2 finish in Bahrain

Ferrari enjoyed a dream start to the 2022 Formula One season as they recorded a 1-2 finish at the season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix on Sunday. Charles Leclerc finished in first place after getting pole position in qualifying. Teammate Carlos Sainz had a bit of luck on his side but he also had an excellent drive finishing P2 for the Scuderia. The surprise on the podium was seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton in third place. Mercedes have had to deal with a slew of problems since pre-season testing and nobody expected them to finish on the podium. However, failures of both Red Bull cars saw the silver arrows finishing third and fourth to round off a good day of racing.
