If there ever was a driver on the 2022 grid who needed a good comeback story, it was British-Thai racer Alex Albon. When his Formula One career began, Albon was a driver for Red Bull Racing after being promoted from Scuderia Toro Rosso. He was recruited as a replacement for Pierre Gasly. The expectations of being in a team like Red Bull Racing will always be high but that kind of pressure on a rookie is surely unfair. Perhaps the pressure got to him during his first stint in F1 as he just could not get the results necessary. It was not like his performances were poor or even below par. The Brit was consistently finishing in the points but it was never high up enough. There was bad luck involved as well but not getting a single podium during his time at Red Bull surely hurt his chances. Albon currently is a driver for Williams and his teammate is Nicholas Latifi.

Alex Albon before F1

Albon was born on March 23, 1996 in London, England. Nigel Albon, his father, was a British racing driver who competed in the British Touring Car Championship and the Porsche Carrera Cup. Kankamol, his mother, is a Thai woman. Albon began racing karts competitively at the age of eight, competing locally and winning the Hoddesdon Championship. Albon moved up from karting to the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup series in 2012, driving for EPIC Racing and finishing 38th out of 49 drivers in the championship.

Albon joined KTR in 2013 to compete in the 2013 Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 season with Yu Kanamaru and Ignazio D’Agosto, finishing 16th out of 36 drivers. The Brit then moved to European Formula 3 in 2015, teaming up with Dorian Boccolacci at Signature. With two pole positions, five podiums, and 187 points overall, he finished sixth overall.

Albon joined ART in the FIA Formula 2 Championship in 2017. In his maiden F2 season, he scored 86 points and finished 10th in the drivers’ standings. Albon was signed by DAMS in April 2018 to partner Nicholas Latifi for the 2018 season. He was initially only confirmed for the first round, but the following month he was confirmed as a full-time driver for the team. He finished the season in third place in the drivers’ standings.

F1 debut and teams

Albon was dismissed from his Nissan e.dams Formula E contract on November 26, 2018, amid rumours that he was set to join Scuderia Toro Rosso in Formula One. Toro Rosso confirmed Albon would join the squad for 2019 alongside Daniil Kvyat on the same day. Albon’s best qualifying result with Toro Rosso was ninth position in the British Grand Prix, however he did not score any points in the race. Albon qualified sixteenth for the German Grand Prix. He and Toro Rosso took advantage of changing weather conditions to finish sixth after running as high as fourth.

Following the Hungarian Grand Prix, Red Bull Racing announced that Albon would take over for Pierre Gasly and partner Max Verstappen at the team beginning with the Belgian Grand Prix in 2019. Albon finished seventh in the World Drivers’ Championship with 92 points in his maiden season. At the FIA Prize Giving Ceremony, he was named Rookie of the Year. In 2020, he continued to race for Red Bull with Verstappen, although he did not have the finest of seasons, finishing seventh with 105 points. In 2021, Albon was replaced by Sergio Perez at Red Bull and the Brit had to wait a whole year to find a new seat. Currently, he is a part of the Williams F1 team.
