Despite reports that Pierre Gasly would leave AlphaTauri, Franz Tost, the team’s CEO, confirmed that the Frenchman will remain with the team for the 2023 season. When it comes to team lineups for 2023, Gasly’s future in Formula One has been a hot topic. After Sergio Perez’s contract extension was confirmed following the Monaco Grand Prix, the Frenchman’s chances of returning to the’main’ Red Bull team were crushed. Gasly may have sought a move away from the Red Bull youth team now that the Red Bull avenue has been closed. While he is under contract with AlphaTauri until the end of 2023, his contract apparently has a condition that allows him to quit the team at the end of 2022 if no position at Red Bull becomes available.

The AlphaTauri team have made no announcements about their driver lineup for 2023 until now. Team Principal Tost stated before of the Canadian Grand Prix that Gasly’s status in the team for next season was certain. “He will be a driver for Scuderia AlphaTauri in 2023. This is 100 per cent confirmed,” Tost said as per RacingNews365.com. “He has a valid contract, there’s nothing more to say.”

Alonso earns front row start in Canada

Alpine driver Fernando Alonso finished on the front row for the first time in quite a while as he set the second fastest time on Saturday in a very wet qualifying for the 2022 Canadian GP. The Spaniard was 0.646s behind Red Bull’s Max Verstappen who will start from pole on Sunday. Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz will start from third on the grid, followed by Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton. Verstappen was on a flyer throughout Q3 and set a lap time of 1:21.299s. The two Haas cars of Kevin Magnussen and Mick Schumacher are in fifth and sixth respectively, followed by George Russell. Daniel Ricciardo and Guanyu Zhou rounded off the top 10.

Russell had opted for slicks in his final flying lap, a decision that did not pay off as the Mercedes slid out in the first turn on a very wet day in Montreal. His teammate Hamilton had an excellent Saturday, something that will instill him with some much needed confidence ahead of the race. Zhou of Alfa Romeo put in an impressive shift as well.

Checo causes Q2 red flag

A lock up for Perez in Q2 saw him run straight into the barriers, causing the session to be delayed due to a red flag. The Mexican would have hoped to earn a front row place on the grid but it was not to be. The two Haas cars showed their true pace in the session as they made a rare Q3 appearance with Magnussen in P9 and Schumacher in P6. Verstappen was the fastest in the session with a time of 1:23.746s, followed by Alonso in P2. Those eliminated in Q2 were Lando Norris, Charles Leclerc, Sergio Perez, Alex Albon and Valterri Bottas.
