Aston Martin reserve driver Nico Hulkenberg got his taste of Formula One after a sizeable gap and is eager to return to the sport as a full-time driver. As per the official Formula One website, Hulkenberg described his latest experience ‘fun’, and would be up for a proper return to the sport. The German driver had to step in for Sebastian Vettel for the Bahrain GP and the Saudi Arabian GP. The four-time world champion was recovering from a bout of COVID-19. In the first race, Hulkenberg out-qualified his teammate Lance Stroll and finished P17 and in the second, he finished in P12, ahead of Stroll.

“Yes, of course, if there is a good opportunity, definitely I’m up for it [a full-time return to F1]. Now having been away and having done Bahrain, the rush of qualifying, the excitement of the race, the battling on Lap 1, there is a lot of great things that happen in Formula 1, and it’s a lot of fun,” Hulkenberg said.

“So, if the right opportunity is there, of course, but that’s not going to be an easy, easy task. I think everyone’s learning curve is very steep with these new cars. There’s lots to learn, you know, and we’ll continue for the months to come.”

Speaking about his race at the Jeddah Corniche Circuit, Hulkenberg said that he was happy to finish the race despite not being able to score any points for the team.

“It was a demanding race, but I am happy with my performance considering my limited experience with the car. We put together a clean race, but unfortunately the events and opportunities did not really go our way. We gave it everything out there, but points were out of reach. I am happy to have helped the team by standing in again and I will remain on standby should I be needed again,” the German driver said.

Vettel returns down under

Sebastian Vettel will race in Australia for the first time this season after missing the Bahrain and Saudi Arabian Grands Prix due to Covid-19. Vettel, the four-time champion, had to step aside for reserve driver Nico Hulkenberg in the first two races of the season after testing positive for Covid-19. He will, however, race at Melbourne’s Albert Park circuit on the weekend of April 8-10.

Aston Martin, along with Williams, is the only team yet to score points so far this season. The team had a lot of promise going into the new season with F1’s new technical regulations but it has been disappointing so far. Vettel had spoken about the new AMR-22 after the first pre-season testing of the year.
