At the event in Abu Dhabi the year before, McLaren and one of its major sponsors, Vuse, introduced Driven by Change, offering underrepresented creatives a stage for the race weekend. In order to give the MCL36 car a new design for the season’s last race at the Yas Marina Circuit, McLaren collaborated with Lebanese artist Anna Tangles. Tangles’ artwork highlights on the sidepods and front wing with swooping, flowing forms that interconnect to offer the livery a new update while keeping the papaya and blue colours of the team.

Dedication

The patterns, which are consistent with the wider livery and design, take the place of the typical block colours that are present on the car. The livery was unveiled on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi on Wednesday night before being used throughout the weekend on the cars driven by Lando Norris and Daniel Ricciardo, the latter of whom was making his farewell appearance for the team. As a devoted F1 fan, Tangles remarked, “I never imagined that I would ever have my artwork displayed at a grand prix, and it’s all thanks to Driven by Change.” “I dedicate my spare time to training and encouraging other artists, particularly other Middle Eastern female creatives, to embrace their passion and skills, and so it’s a privilege to be a part of a community that supports the same ambition of empowering underrepresented artists in this way.”

Building a legacy

The executive director of brand and marketing at McLaren, Louise McEwen, added: “We are thrilled to once again include a design by a young artist on our race vehicles, celebrating creativity with Vuse. “Anna Tangles creates beautiful artwork and has a moving narrative that precisely captures the essence and core principles of the Driven by Change campaign. The programme is creating a legacy that we are eager to continue advancing by leveraging the talent of up-and-coming creatives on our global platform.
