McLaren is the most recent Formula One team to fire up its new car ahead of the 2022 season. On Thursday, the British company shared a short video of its Mercedes-powered MCL36 challenger being fired up for the first time at its Woking headquarters. McLaren has confirmed the successful ignition of their 2022 car, following Mercedes, Ferrari, and Alpine. On the evening of February 11, the MCL36, which will be driven by Lando Norris and Daniel Ricciardo, will be unveiled in an online event. The unveiling of McLaren’s car will be streamed and broadcast live on Sky Sports F1.

The new McLaren F1 challenger will then make its official on-track debut during the first three-day test in Barcelona, which takes place between February 23 and 25. The season will then begin with a second three-day test in Bahrain on March 10, followed by the season opener in Sakhir on March 20.

McLaren claimed the only one-two finish of the 2021 season, finishing fourth in the constructors’ standings, one position behind Ferrari. McLaren Racing CEO Zak Brown is optimistic that the team can maintain its recent success as the sport enters a new era of regulations.

“We head into the new Formula 1 season with a clear aim to build on the foundations of our recent progress,” he wrote in a recent column published on McLaren’s official website.

“In the last three years McLaren has enjoyed its best run of form for more than a decade. In 2021 we finished fourth in the FIA Formula 1 constructors’ championship, having amassed 275 points, just 48.5 points off third place and comfortably ahead of fifth. But we are still early in our journey to return to the front. We remain ambitious and determined but realistic.”

McLaren raise concerns over FIA penalty points system

McLaren is calling for a reform of F1’s penalty points system, citing concerns that Lando Norris may have been banned despite the fact that there is no evidence he drove dangerously. A total of 12 penalty points accrued on a driver’s FIA super-license over the course of a year will result in a one-race suspension, albeit this punishment has yet to be imposed since the system was implemented in 2014. However, it is possible that it will happen in 2022, as certain drivers are close to crossing the line. Yuki Tsunoda and Sergio Perez have eight and seven points, respectively, and must avoid achieving 12 points in the first three races of next season to prevent having some of their points wiped away before the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix.

From Red Bull’s perspective, Max Verstappen’s situation is more critical since he will carry seven points through to the Italian Grand Prix in September, giving him 15 races to negotiate before his penalty total begins to decline. Norris, on the other hand, has less concerns with five points – none of which will be removed until June in Azerbaijan – but McLaren is upset with how the British driver was treated by the stewards last year.
