Max Verstappen’s highly anticipated sim-racing return did not result in victory; however, Team Redline team-mates Maximilian Benecke and Jeffrey Rietveld finished second. Surprisingly, Mercedes’ esports team won the virtual Spa six-hour race, which served as the third round of the virtual Le Mans series. Even when he’s not racing, it appears that the newly crowned double World Champion can’t get away from the Silver Arrows, who won the event with James Baldwin, Bono Huis, and Graham Carroll behind the wheel. Verstappen was racing in the LMP2 category, which is the top category in the virtual series, but he didn’t take control of the car until the fourth stint of the race.

Verstappen attempted to pass a slower GTE car at Eau Rouge while driving the car, but there simply wasn’t enough room for the 25-year-old. It resulted in a collision that sent the Red Bull driver into the tyre barrier on the exit of Eau Rouge, a barrier that has claimed the lives of numerous Formula One drivers. Fortunately, the damage was not too severe, allowing the team to continue and finish in second place.

The result moved Team Redline into the Championship lead, with the fourth round of the five-race championship set to take place next month at the American circuit of Sebring, a race that will last four hours. Verstappen wasn’t the only F1-related participant, as ex-F1 driver and current IndyCar star Romain Grosjean competed in the LMP2 class for his own R8G Esports team.

Their performance was significantly worse than Team Redline’s, as they finished seventeenth, two places lower than they qualified.
