Lewis Hamilton was denied a record-breaking eighth Drivers’ Championship in the most agonizing and contentious circumstances in Abu Dhabi, and his chances of making amends this season have been shattered by Mercedes failing to create a car as competitive for the new age of regulations as Red Bull or Ferrari. The Briton is under contract with Mercedes until the end of 2023, but considering the happenings on the track in the previous six months, he may be at a crossroads over his future.

‘Why should I stop?’

The 37-year-old ranks sixth in the Drivers’ Championship, 75 points behind title-holder Max Verstappen and 34 points behind his new teammate, George Russell. However, Hamilton claims that he has no intention of retiring. “Let’s take this season – I probably won’t win the title, but I feel the same pleasure in racing as when I started. Why should I stop? Maybe one day I will not be able to take the pressure anymore, I’ll be tired, but that day has not yet come.”

Could he win the eighth title ?

It’s easy to believe the eighth title is becoming a more distant fantasy unless Mercedes can radically turn their fortunes around, and then Hamilton can reestablish himself versus Russell. However, the 103-time grand prix champion does not see things that way. “Of course I believe that. I’ve been with these guys (Mercedes) for 10 years. I know how they work and the type of culture – no trials, we win and lose together. They give their souls to bring us back to the top.”

Verstappen or Leclerc this season

When the 37 year old British driver was asked about who will emerge to the top this season and win the world championship between Red Bull’s Max Verstappen and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, Hamilton said both drivers have a fair chance. “So you take it for granted that we at Mercedes are doomed? Don’t underestimate us! Ferrari are stronger in qualifying and Red Bull in the race. But it changes with every race, and Ferrari have shown they know how to create a great car. And Charles is very strong.”

Hamilton fans will be happy that he is not going anywhere anytime soon and will wait for him and Mercedes to make a comeback in future. Azerbaijan Grand Prix is all set to be the next F1 race in the calendar and will be hosted on 12th of June at the Baku city circuit.
