The time was set in the final minutes of the session and was the fastest lap of the weekend. Hamilton only drove the car in the afternoon because new teammate George Russell was in the car in the morning. For much of the day, the former Williams driver held the fastest lap before being surpassed by the seven-time World Champion.

After running in dry conditions on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday mornings, the circuit was artificially saturated during today’s lunch break so teams and Pirelli could collect data on wet weather tyres. Alpine, Aston Martin, and Haas did not participate in the afternoon session due to issues in the morning session.

Russell’s morning time was still good enough for second place at the finish, while the Red Bull duo of Sergio Perez and Max Verstappen finished third and fourth, respectively. Vettel was fifth, and the two-by-twos continued below him, with Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz sixth and seventh, ahead of Williams’ Alexander Albon and Nicholas Latifi.

Daniel Ricciardo rounded out the top ten, with a time that was only slightly faster than teammate Lando Norris’, who finished 11th. Alonso finished 12th but was forced to sit out the majority of the race, with rookie Guanyu Zhou and Pierre Gasly following the veteran Spaniard. Nikita Mazepin, whose Haas future is currently in doubt due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, finished 15th, with Valtteri Bottas rounding out the Alfa Romeo times.
